Government is relying more and more on tax collections to build up its revenue. The Gambia Revenue Authority had announced earlier that tax revenue collected for the first quarter of 2026 (January to March 2026) amounted to D7.71 billion dalasi, surpassing the target of 7.47 billion dalasi by 3 percent.
Meanwhile, according to the Budget Performance Report for the First Quarter of 2026 by the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs, non-tax revenue has fallen drastically by 58 percent, from 1.1 billion dalasi to 485.9 million dalasi for the first quarter of 2026 compared to the corresponding period last year. This represents 9 percent of the annual budget target for non-tax revenue of 5.16 billion dalasi.
It is quite evident that while tax revenue continues to rise non-tax revenue continues to fall and the government will continue to face immense challenges in meeting its expenditure outlays. The productive sector is not given the requisite support it needs to generate income and support lives and livelihoods.
