Farmers in Gambisara and Sabi in URR, the Panchang Catchment area and Jahanka in CRR, and Misira in LRR have reported to Foroyaa after the Bulock incident that attempts have been made to stop them from cultivating their traditional farms because of claims that they fall under Senegalese territory. Some farmers like those in Jahanka, Upper Fulladu West are still cultivating their lands and have called on the Senegalese and Gambian authorities to discuss and resolve the border issues so that their security and safety would not be imperiled. Those farmers in Panchang who briefly stopped their farming activities are calling on the two governments to settle the border issues so that they will not suffer losses.
Foroyaa has contacted the Gambian authorities who promised that this matter is being handled at the highest level in the two countries. They emphasised that they have been reliably informed that a presidential decree in Senegal did not include any order to stop farmers from farming. The Gambian authorities added that the security council of Senegal is meeting today to resolve matters affecting the people on the ground.
Foroyaa will contact the authorities before the next publication to find out how far they have gone to put an end to put an end to the dilemma being faced by farmers at the border, who are not privy to any border demarcation indicating where their traditional farmland is located. The sooner this problem is addressed the better the relations between the states and peoples.
