The Brikama Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 23 July 2026, granted bail to a man accused of stabbing one person, beating another and assaulting a police officer after he pleaded not guilty to four criminal charges brought against him by the State.
Mustapha Ndow appeared before Magistrate Darboe at the Brikama Magistrates’ Court on 23 July 2026 to answer charges of assault causing actual bodily harm, common assault, malicious injury to property and assaulting a police officer.
The charges stem from an alleged incident that prosecutors said occurred on 19 July 2026 at Brikama Gidda in the West Coast Region. When the case was called for plea, Police Prosecutor Sergeant 4812 J. Preirra appeared on behalf of the Inspector General of Police, while the accused appeared before the court without legal representation.
The charge sheet was read and translated into the Mandinka language for the accused. After the charges were explained to him, Mustapha Ndow pleaded not guilty to all four counts. Following the plea, Sgt. J. Preirra applied for an adjournment to allow the prosecution time to produce its witnesses at the next hearing.
“I apply for the matter to be adjourned to enable the prosecution to bring its witnesses before the court on the next adjourned date,” Sgt. Preirra told the court.
The prosecutor also informed the court that the State had no objection to the accused being granted bail pending trial.
“I have no objection to the accused person being admitted to bail,” he said.
According to the charge sheet, the first count alleges assault causing actual bodily harm, contrary to Section 196 of the Criminal Offences Act, 2025. The prosecution alleged that on 19 July 2026, at Brikama Gidda in the West Coast Region, Mustapha Ndow stabbed Abdourahman Jallow with a knife on his left eyebrow, causing him actual bodily harm.
The particulars of the offence state, “Mustapha Ndow, for that you did on the 19th day of July, 2026 at Brikama Gidda, West Coast Region in the Republic of The Gambia, stab one Abdourahman Jallow with a knife on his left eyebrow and causing him actual bodily harm.”
The second count charges the accused with common assault, contrary to Section 195 of the Criminal Offences Act, 2025. The prosecution alleged that on the same date and at the same location, Mustapha Ndow assaulted Asmatou Jallow by beating her.
The particulars of the offence read, “Mustapha Ndow, for that you did on the 19th day of July, 2026 at Brikama Gidda, West Coast Region in the Republic of The Gambia, assault Asmatou Jallow by beating.”
The third count alleged malicious injury to property, contrary to Section 290 of the Criminal Offences Act, 2025. According to the prosecution, the accused broke plates belonging to Abdourahman Jallow. The value of the damaged property was not stated in the charge sheet.
The particulars state, “Mustapha Ndow, for that you did on the 19th day of July, 2026 at Brikama Gidda, West Coast Region in the Republic of The Gambia, broke the plates, value unknown, being the property of Abdourahman Jallow.” The fourth count charges Mustapha Ndow with assaulting a police officer, contrary to Section 199 of the Criminal Offences Act, 2025.
The prosecution alleged that on the same date and at the same place, the accused assaulted Police Officer Abdou Darboe while the officer was acting in the lawful execution of his duties. According to the particulars of the offence, the accused allegedly insulted the police officer and imposed fear on him while he was carrying out his official functions. The charge sheet stated, “Mustapha Ndow, for that you did on the 19th day of July, 2026 at Brikama Gidda, West Coast Region in the Republic of The Gambia, assault a police officer in the name of Abdou Darboe in due execution of his function, by insulting and imposing fear on him.”
After hearing the prosecution’s application, Magistrate Darboe granted the request for an adjournment. The magistrate also admitted the accused to bail pending the continuation of the trial. In granting bail, the court ordered that Mustapha Ndow provide two Gambian sureties. The court further directed that each surety must deposit a valid national identity card with the court registrar and enter into a bail bond of D100,000. Magistrate Darboe then adjourned the matter until 4 August 2026, when the prosecution is expected to begin calling its witnesses.
