No person could become Secretary General of the United Nations without the approval of the five permanent members of the Security Council, namely, China, France, Russia, United Kingdom and United States. A candidate has to have recommendation from 9 members of the Security council including all the five permanent members.
The current candidates for the post of UN Secretary General are a former President of Chile and former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet; the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency Rafael Grossil, the Secretary General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development Rebeca Grynspan and the former President of Senegal Macky Sall.
