The National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC) has confirmed it is facing a major power crisis, citing capacity deficits, fuel shortages, and supply chain disruptions.
Speaking at a press conference, Operations and Planning Manager Sanna Gomez revealed that current electricity generation stands at 78 megawatts, including imports and local production, against a demand of 106 megawatts, making load shedding unavoidable to maintain network stability.
Gomez attributed the shortfall to technical challenges, fuel supply difficulties, and global factors affecting access to spare parts, noting that key engines in Brikama and Kotu are affected.
He urged the public to conserve energy, describing the situation as a crisis and calling for collective support as the utility works to stabilize power supply nationwide.
