The leader of the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC), Mama Kandeh, has stated that any political coalition excluding the National People’s Party (NPP), GDC, and the United Democratic Party (UDP) would face significant challenges ahead of the 2026 elections.
Speaking in an interview with Eye Africa, Kandeh emphasized that the three parties hold considerable electoral strength, making them central to any viable coalition.
He also addressed his recent appearance at a protest in Brufut linked to the case of Ousainou Bojang, stating that his presence was to show solidarity with young people and understand their concerns.
Kandeh noted that reactions to his attendance were mixed, with some welcoming his presence while others expressed reservations about political involvement.
On coalition-building, he ruled out any alliance between GDC and UDP, citing disagreements over leadership terms. However, he reiterated the importance of opposition unity and indicated openness to alternative arrangements, including a possible “third force” coalition.
Kandeh stressed that numerical strength would ultimately determine the success of any political alliance.
