Prosecution fails to prove its case against Ousainou Bojang in Sukuta Jabang traffic light shooting

A High Court judge in Banjul on Monday acquitted Ousainou Bojang of charges related to the killing of two police officers and the wounding of a third at the Sukuta Jabang traffic light, as well as his sister, Amie Bojang, who had been accused of acting as an accessory after the fact.

Justice Ebrima Jaiteh delivered the ruling, finding that the prosecution had failed to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt. The verdict brings to a close a high-profile trial that has captivated the nation and sparked intense public debate over justice and law enforcement accountability.

Ousainou Bojang had faced murder and attempted murder charges following the September 2023 incident, while his sister was accused of aiding him after the attack. Throughout the proceedings, the defense challenged the reliability of the evidence, arguing that key elements were inconsistent and circumstantial.

Outside the courthouse, family members and supporters expressed relief and jubilation at the decision, while legal experts noted that the case underscores both the importance of rigorous due process and the challenges prosecutors face when building a case on limited or contested evidence.

The acquittal is likely to reverberate across The Gambia’s legal and law enforcement communities, prompting renewed discussion about investigative procedures and the rights of the accused in high-stakes criminal cases.
