A brief disruption marked President Adama Barrow’s 2026 State of the Nation Address after two National Assembly Members clashed over parliamentary procedure.
The interruption occurred mid-speech when the Member for Foni Kansala, Almameh Gibba, raised a point of order through the Speaker, protesting against alleged clapping from spectators seated in the gallery.
He argued that such conduct was in violation of parliamentary rules.
However, his intervention was swiftly challenged by the Member for Lower Saloum, Sainey Jawara, who dismissed the claim and accused his colleague of citing the wrong provision.
The exchange led to a momentary pause in proceedings, drawing attention from lawmakers and observers, as tensions briefly flared on the floor of the Assembly.
President Barrow appeared to react lightly to the situation, momentarily lowering his head with a smile as the disagreement unfolded.
Speaker Fabakary Tombong Jatta later intervened, ruling against the objection.
He stated that he did not hear any clapping and cautioned members against unnecessary interruptions.
The Speaker further urged lawmakers to maintain order and allow the President to continue his address without disruption.
Proceedings resumed shortly after, with the President continuing his address to the Assembly.
