The Gambia Police Force responds to baby dumping incident at Farato.

‎Authorities in the Upper River Region have confirmed the rescue of a newborn baby boy who was allegedly dumped into a toilet in Fatoto village.

‎According to a statement from the Gambia Fire and Rescue Service, the incident occurred on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, at around 11:14 a.m. Personnel from the Basse Fire and Rescue Station were alerted and dispatched to the scene.

‎However, due to the distance of approximately 38 kilometres to the location, the recovery operation was carried out before their arrival by officers of the Gambia Police Force, including the Criminal Investigation Department, with support from members of the local community.

‎The case reportedly involves a 20-year-old suspect identified as Kumba Camara.

‎Medical personnel at the Fatoto Health Facility confirmed that the baby is currently under close observation and is expected to be referred to Basse Hospital for further medical examination and care.

‎The Fire and Rescue Service strongly condemned the act, describing it as inhumane and unlawful. The agency urged the public to respect and protect the rights of children, particularly their right to life, warning that such actions carry severe consequences.

‎The Chief Fire Officer, management, and staff of the Service also expressed their wishes for the baby’s swift recovery and a healthy future.
