Yankuba Darboe, Chairman of Brikama Area Council (BAC), has strongly responded to critics of the United Democratic Party’s (UDP) nationwide tour and its campaign promises.
He urges such critics to think carefully before comparing opposition pledges to those of the ruling National People’s Party.
In an interview with the media on Wednesday, Darboe said there was no comparison between opposition promises and those made by President Adama Barrow. “We are the opposition. Our role is to tell the electorate what we intend to do if elected. President Barrow, on the other hand, has made numerous promises that he has failed to deliver and must be held accountable,” he said.
Darboe adds that if the UDP is elected and fails to fulfil its promises, the public would then have the right to hold the party accountable.
“President Barrow needs to show what he has achieved over the last five to eight years. What has he delivered? Unlike the UDP, we inform citizens of our intentions if allowed to govern,” he said.
He also noted that the opposition’s pledges are in response to the perceived failures of the Barrow administration. “Barrow controls public funds yet has allegedly withheld benefits unless certain individuals are removed from office. Who does that?” he asked.
Darboe criticized the President for failing to implement promises made while in opposition, including free national health insurance, free Wi-Fi in Brikama, and reducing the price of rice to D700.
The BAC Chairman urged voters to elect UDP leader Ousainu Darboe to the presidency if they wish to hold the party accountable. He also emphasized that the proposed five (5) million-dalasi ward development fund is realistic and pledged to champion additional development initiatives nationwide.
