Activist Urges President Barrow Not to Go for Third Term

By Isatou Sarr

Prominent environmental activist and political commentator, Kemo Fatty has urged President Adama Barrow not to seek for third term in office, describing such a move as a betrayal of the 2016 coalition mandate that brought him to power.

Speaking at a press conference organized by the People’s Alliance for Change (PAC) at Alliance Française on Friday, Fatty called on the President to reflect on the current political climate and the promises of the 2016 coalition.

“To His Excellency President Adama Barrow, the emergence of PAC should serve as a moment of reflection,” Fatty said. “Relying on the 1997 constitution to seek a third term is unacceptable to the Gambian people.”

While acknowledging Barrow’s achievements in infrastructure, traffic management, and women’s empowerment, Fatty warned that a third-term bid could undermine democracy and give undue advantage to the ruling National People’s Party (NPP). He said such a move risks consolidating power and weakening the multi-party system.

Fatty also referenced the late Solon Sandeng, who he said sacrificed his life advocating for electoral reforms, noting that goals such as diaspora voting and constitutional reform remain unfulfilled.

“We are still banking on a constitution from 1997, designed to concentrate power in a few hands,” Fatty said. “President Barrow has earned respect, but for the sake of democracy, he should not contest in 2026.”

He indicated that PAC and other opposition groups were prepared to strengthen democratic processes and ensure a fair, multi-party election.

“The 2026 election must be a contest among the people, not just a few individuals,” Fatty said, calling on Gambians to safeguard electoral fairness and national unity.
