A man described by Portuguese authorities as close to deposed Guinea Bissau president Umaro Sissoco Embaló has been arrested in Lisbon after arriving with suitcases containing around five million euros in cash.
Portugal’s judicial police said the suspect was detained on Sunday at the Figo Maduro military airport and is under investigation for suspected smuggling and money laundering. Embaló’s wife, who was on the same flight, was not arrested.
Authorities said the operation followed an anonymous tip and confirmed that the flight travelled from Marrakech with a stopover in Bissau. An investigation is now under way in coordination with Portugal’s tax authorities.
