Chief Justice Hassan B. Jallow has disclosed that The Gambia continues to face shortage of lawyers despite graduating about 73 law students annually.
Speaking Monday at the graduation ceremony of the 14th cohort of students at the Banjul High Court Complex, Jallow said the deficit affects the courts, the Bar and the wider public service.
“We face quite a shortage of lawyers … a strong, well-trained and equipped legal profession is essential for the administration of justice in any democracy,” he said.
He notes that although dozens of students qualify each year, the supply remains insufficient. He encouraged aspiring legal practitioners and qualified law graduates to enroll at the Bar, assuring them of support from the Bar School.
Moving on, Jallow urged the new graduates to uphold high ethical standards, stressing that the Legal Council remains committed to enforcing professionalism within the Bar. He said the council has established panels to investigate complaints from the public against legal practitioners.
Speaking on behalf of the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Solicitor General Hussein Thomasi challenged the graduates to maintain dignity, honesty and respect in their practice. He called on them to serve as “ambassadors in the temple of justice and guardians of the rule of law.”
Thomasi reminded the graduates that public trust is central to the legal profession, advising them to avoid prioritizing financial gain. “Money should not be the primary goal of a legal practitioner,” he said, urging the new lawyers to remain humble, disciplined and courageous.
In a vote of thanks, Mafoyem Tchinda Loveline, the overall best student, thanked lecturers of The Gambia Bar School and encouraged her colleagues to uphold professional standards and stay updated on legal developments. She advised students who did not graduate to persevere, noting that “with resilience and hard work, success is inevitable.”
