A man accused of stealing four 415 electric transformers valued at D242,600 from the National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC) in Brikama has been remanded at Mile 2 Central Prison.

Muhamed Kuyateh appeared on Thursday, 20th November, before Principal Magistrate Anna O. Mendy at Brikama Magistrates’ Court on two counts: breaking into a transformer building and stealing the equipment. Kuyateh, who was unrepresented, pleaded not guilty to both charges.

Deputy Superintendent Buteh Sawaneh, prosecuting for the Inspector General of Police, opposed bail, citing concerns that the accused could interfere with investigations or abscond. The prosecutor also revealed that the surname “Kuyateh” may not be his real name, suggesting possible attempts to mislead authorities.

The offences are said to have occurred on 15th November 2025 at NAWEC’s transformer building in Jamisa, West Coast Region. Under the first count, Kuyateh is charged with unlawfully breaking into the building, while the second count specifically accuses him of stealing the transformers, a crime considered a felony under the Criminal Offences Act 2025.

Magistrate Mendy granted the prosecution’s application for an adjournment and remanded the accused until 1st December 2025, when the hearing of the first prosecution witness is scheduled.
