Their Voice Must Be Heard (TVMBH) expresses deep concern regarding President Adama Barrow’s recent acceptance of a crocodile presented to him by the Hunters Association during his nationwide tour. This incident follows a similar occurrence several years ago when the President accepted an illegally killed hippo.
TVMBH underscores that the acceptance of such wildlife gifts is illegal under Gambian and international conservation laws, and risks setting a dangerous precedent for the exploitation and killing of protected species.
“As the head of state, President Barrow should act as a statesman,” TVMBH states. “He must refrain from encouraging activities that undermine wildlife protection simply for political symbolism or popularity.”
At a time when The Gambia is actively lobbying for climate and environmental financing, the government must demonstrate consistency between its commitments abroad and its actions at home.
TVMBH further calls on the international community, including environmental partners and donor agencies, to closely monitor such incidents and take appropriate action should similar violations occur in the future.
