Thousands of enthusiastic supporters of the United Democratic Party (UDP), on Saturday, gave their leader, Lawyer Ousainou Darboe, a rousing welcome at the Banjul International Airport following his return from a European tour.
The massive turnout came at a crucial time for the party, which has recently been hit by internal divisions and the resignation of several key executive members. While some political observers predict the split could weaken the UDP’s electoral chances, others believe the party’s loyal grassroots base remains unshakable, a belief that appeared validated by the overwhelming show of support.
Described by many as one of The Gambia’s most influential political figures, Darboe continues to command the confidence and loyalty of thousands of followers. The streets were turned ‘yellow’ the UDP’s signature color, as jubilant supporters, including youths, women, and elders, lined the roads from the airport to Pipeline, chanting his name and reaffirming their commitment to the party’s cause.
Some supporters were calling on President Adama Barrow to step down ahead of the 2026 presidential elections, insisting that Darboe remains the rightful leader to bring about change.
Meanwhile, Agriculture Minister Demba Sabally, a former UDP member now aligned with President Barrow’s National People’s Party (NPP), dismissed the massive turnout, describing it as a ‘mobile crowd’ that has never translated into votes in previous elections.
As the 2026 presidential race draws closer, political activities across the country are intensifying, with major parties recalibrating their strategies to capture the nation’s top seat.
Darboe later addressed his supporters at his residence in Pipeline, thanking them for their unwavering loyalty and urging unity and perseverance ahead of the next elections.
