The Government of The Gambia has categorically denied recent claims that it issued 20,000 diplomatic passports, including to family members and former officials of Senegalese President Macky Sall. The clarification comes following allegations by a Senegalese journalist and politician, which the Gambian authorities describe as “false, baseless, and misleading.”
In an official statement released on Thursday, 24 October 2025, the government emphasized that all diplomatic passports are issued under strict policies and procedures that ensure transparency and accountability. These passports are reserved exclusively for Gambian diplomats, their spouses, senior government officials, nationals serving in international organizations, and individuals formally designated to represent The Gambia’s interests at home and abroad.
The government specifically refuted claims involving former President Macky Sall and his family, stating that no passports have been requested or issued to them. Authorities also dismissed suggestions linking the passport claims to the recent departure of certain Senegalese nationals, calling the insinuation “entirely unfounded and deeply concerning.”
“The issuance of diplomatic passports in The Gambia is strictly regulated and monitored. Any suggestion to the contrary is an attempt to create misunderstanding and unnecessary tension between two brotherly nations,” the statement noted.
Officials reiterated that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad, in coordination with the Ministry of Interior and the Gambia Immigration Department, continues to implement stringent measures to safeguard the integrity of the passport issuance system. These measures include regular audits and verification processes designed to prevent misuse or fraudulent acquisition.
The government urged the public and media to rely solely on verified information released through official channels, emphasizing that spreading unverified claims could undermine public trust and diplomatic relations.
