The flag bearer of the United Democratic Party (UDP) and former Vice President of The Gambia, Lawyer Ousainou Darboe, has vowed to eliminate corruption, reduce poverty, and address youth unemployment if elected president of The Gambia in the 2026 elections.
Thousands of UDP supporters thronged the Banjul International Airport and later gathered at Darboe’s residence in Pipeline, Kairaba Avenue on Saturday, to welcome him and express their desire for political change in the country.
Addressing the enthusiastic crowd, Lawyer Ousainou Darboe, popularly called Baa Ousainou, renewed his commitment to serve the Gambian people and promised a transformative leadership that prioritizes integrity, accountability, and opportunity for all.
“I met Gambians in the diaspora who are hungry for change. They feel the pain of those at home and are deeply concerned about the living conditions of the masses. Our youths are crying for employment; they have the right to it. There will be a massive transformation in 2026,” he declared.
Darboe criticized the Barrow-led administration, accusing it of corruption, incompetence, and poor governance, which he said have worsened the living conditions of Gambians.
“We know the pain and frustration of the people, especially the high cost of living. Gambians are tired and frustrated with the corruption and incompetence of Barrow’s government,” he stated.
He lamented that if President Barrow had heeded the concerns of ordinary citizens, many of the country’s pressing challenges would have been resolved.
“We must stand up firmly and rescue our country now, or else The Gambia will sink,” he warned.
Calling for political unity, the UDP leader urged opposition parties not aligned with the incumbent to join forces with the UDP to unseat President Barrow in 2026.
“The loyalty and commitment our supporters have shown today are unmatched. This level of dedication can only be found among UDP supporters,” he added.
Darboe also condemned the alleged mismanagement of public funds, arguing that the millions lost to corruption could have been invested in critical sectors such as education, healthcare, agriculture, and fisheries.
“Under my leadership, irregularities will end. Every Gambian will get their fair share. My government will be disciplined, transparent, and focused on national development,” he pledged.
He referenced Amadou Sanneh’s development policies, noting that the UDP has clear plans to reform the economy and restore good governance.
As the 2026 presidential elections draw closer, Darboe urged Gambians to rally behind the UDP to “rescue the country” from what he described as continued decline under President Barrow’s leadership.
“We don’t make empty promises or lay foundation stones everywhere; we act. Together, we can make The Gambia better,” he reiterated.
