Chief Justice Jallow Honors Female Lawyers at Sharia Law Training Awards

By Nicholas Bass

Chief Justice Hassan B. Jallow on Wednesday presided over the award ceremony for the Female Lawyers’ Association of The Gambia (FLAG) Sharia Law Training, held at the Banjul High Court Complex.

The event celebrated ten female legal practitioners who successfully completed a specialized training program focused on The Gambia’s Islamic law system.

Addressing the graduates, Chief Justice Jallow commended their dedication and highlighted the broader significance of Sharia law in the country. “Congratulations to you all, and congratulations also to the faculty responsible for this training,” he said, extending gratitude to the consultants and FLAG for their efforts in organizing the program.

He emphasized the critical role Sharia law plays in regulating family matters in The Gambia, which affect a large portion of the population. “Most Gambians have their family affairs regulated and governed by Islamic law,” he noted, underlining the need to strengthen the legal framework and ensure practitioners are well-trained in its application.

“The quality of justice delivered in courts depends heavily on the competence of both judges and lawyers,” he stressed. “In this case, the Cadis need a high level of competence in Islamic law, and so do legal practitioners.”

FLAG President Anna Njie echoed those sentiments, noting the training aimed to empower female lawyers to effectively represent women and children before the Cadi Courts. “Sharia law forms a critical part of our legal system, governing matters of marriage, divorce, custody, maintenance, and inheritance areas that profoundly affect women and children,” she said.

She added that the training ensures female lawyers are professionally equipped and empathetically attuned to the needs of litigants in these sensitive areas.

Njie also thanked Chief Justice Jallow for his continued support: “We extend our profound appreciation to Your Lordship for your open-door policy, your consistent support to our Association, and your recommendations that continue to strengthen our institutional growth.”
