In a significant development for the legal profession in The Gambia, three esteemed High Court judges have been sworn in as chairpersons of the Disciplinary Panels of the newly constituted General Legal Council.

The ceremony took place today at the Chief Justice Hassan B. Jallow’s Chambers in the Law Courts Complex, Independence Drive, Banjul, in accordance with Section 28 of the Legal Practitioners (Amendment) Act, 2024.

Each Disciplinary Panel is chaired by a High Court judge and includes two additional members, one from the Public Bar and another from the Private Bar.

These Panels are tasked with hearing and resolving complaints against legal practitioners filed by members of the public, in line with the Legal Practitioners Act and the regulatory duties of the General Legal Council.

The following judges have been appointed as Chairpersons of the Disciplinary Panels: Hon. Justice Ebrima Jaiteh, Hon. Justice Sarah Aryee and Hon. Justice Isatou Janneh.

During the Vote of Thanks, Hon. Justice Ebrima Jaiteh expressed gratitude to the Chief Justice and the General Legal Council for the trust placed in them. He highlighted the Chief Justice’s vision and commitment to enhancing the institutional framework for professional discipline within the legal field.

Justice Jaiteh emphasized that the establishment of these Panels is a pivotal step towards fostering ethical conduct, transparency, and accountability among legal practitioners. He assured that the Panels would fulfill their responsibilities diligently and impartially, adhering to the principles of justice and the rule of law.

In his address, Chief Justice Jallow commended the members for their willingness to serve on the Disciplinary Panels, stressing the essential role of professional discipline in maintaining public trust in the justice system. He remarked on the unique position of the legal profession, underscoring the necessity for fairness, integrity, and accountability in its regulation. The Chief Justice reiterated that the disciplinary process must always be transparent, impartial, and consistent with due process.

He urged the Chairpersons and Members to perform their duties without fear or favor and to be guided solely by the Constitution and the laws of The Gambia. Every decision made by the Panels, he noted, should reflect a commitment to truth, fairness, and justice.

The establishment of these Disciplinary Panels marks a milestone in the General Legal Council’s ongoing reforms aimed at enhancing ethical governance, professional conduct, and public confidence in the legal system. The Chief Justice expressed hope that the work of the appointed members would significantly contribute to preserving the dignity, reputation, and credibility of the legal profession in The Gambia.
