Afro Movement Concerned Over Anti-Democratic Practices Ahead of 2026 Elections

The Afro Movement, under the leadership of presidential aspirant Momodou Bah, has sounded the alarm over what it describes as growing anti-democratic practices and systemic obstacles ahead of the 2026 presidential elections in The Gambia.

Speaking on Saturday at a press conference held at the Woodpecker Hotel in Banjulunding, Bah highlighted concerns ranging from administrative bottlenecks and selective access to public platforms to subtle forms of intimidation that, he warned, could undermine the fairness and inclusivity of the electoral process. “Democracy thrives on transparency, equal opportunity, and respect for political diversity. We will not accept attempts to stifle the voices of the people,” Bah asserted.

The Afro Movement, established in 2021, has positioned itself as a pioneer of political movements in the country, advocating for policy-driven governance over politics of money, lineage, or oligarchy. Bah outlined his vision for the nation, emphasizing the need for economic reforms through the development of the primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary sectors, industrialization to create jobs, and the decentralization of economic development.

He further revealed an ambitious plan to establish an “8th city” between Farafeni and Soma as a hub for tourism, business, and infrastructure development. The project aims to address the country’s current limitations in accommodation, security, and facilities, citing past events like the OIC summit, where guests were forced to stay in neighbouring countries due to insufficient hotel capacity.

Bah also underscored the importance of self-sufficiency, accountability, and strategic planning, drawing lessons from historical models of sustainable development. He criticized the current administration for widespread corruption and failure to support local businesses, stressing that the Afro Movement seeks to implement policies that strengthen the economy and improve living conditions for Gambians.

Despite not being a formally registered political party, the Afro Movement insists on its right to hold rallies and engage citizens directly. Bah stressed that the movement will not be intimidated or deterred, calling on the national and international community to monitor and support the protection of democratic rights in The Gambia.

Concluding the press conference, Bah reaffirmed the movement’s commitment to a peaceful, lawful, and democratic transformation of the country, emphasizing that every Gambian’s voice must count in shaping the nation’s future.
