Lawyer Darboe Promises Political Representation For Abroad-based Gambians

By: Kemo Kanyi

United Democratic Party (UDP) leader Ousainou Darboe has reaffirmed his party’s commitment to ensuring that Gambians living abroad are fully represented in the country’s political and decision-making processes.

Speaking at a meeting in Spain on Saturday, the UDP flag bearer described the Gambian diaspora as a vital pillar of the nation’s economy and emphasized that their participation in national affairs is a right, not a privilege.

“The diaspora contributes over 20 percent to our Gross Domestic Product (GDP),” Darboe said. “Citizens who make such contributions must have a say during elections and must have representation in the National Assembly.”

He lamented that many Gambians abroad have spent decades without the opportunity to vote or take part in national decision-making platforms, calling the situation “selective and unfair.”

Darboe underscored that the 2026 presidential election will be a decisive moment for the country’s future, urging voters to reject the current administration, which he accused of presiding over widespread corruption.

“We have serious issues in this country that must be addressed,” he said. “But they cannot be addressed unless we establish a responsible government to focus on education, agriculture, health, and other critical sectors.”

The UDP leader also called on party members in the diaspora to prepare to serve as polling agents during the upcoming elections, saying their vigilance will be essential in preventing electoral malpractices during the vote-counting process.
