Sports minister says over 22millions dalasis have been released to support football and basketball.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports has announced substantial financial backing for two major national teams, confirming that over D22 million has been released to support football and volleyball engagements.

A total of D20 million was allocated to the Gambia Football Federation (GFF) to facilitate the Scorpions’ involvement in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers held in September and October.

The Ministry said the funding was provided in two instalments and is intended to cover “air tickets, accommodation and allowances for players.”

Volleyball was also boosted, with D2,375,000 disbursed to the Gambia Volleyball Federation (GVF).

The support was directed towards “the hosting of the African Under 18 Youth Development Beach Volleyball championship in Banjul in September and the ongoing U18 Beach Volleyball World Championship in Qatar.”

The Ministry described the spending as part of “government’s continuous investment in supporting the country’s thriving sport sector and youth talent development at local and global stages.”
