A soldier stationed at the Kotu State Guard Workshop has denied any involvement in the tampering or disappearance of government vehicles, directly contradicting a report by the Controller of Government Vehicles that alleged widespread cannibalisation and mismanagement of state assets after the 2017 political impasse.
Appearing before the National Assembly’s Special Select Committee investigating the sale and disposal of assets identified by the Janneh Commission on Tuesday, Adama Jagne dismissed the allegations contained in a 2017 letter from Chief Superintendent Nfamara Saidy Bah, describing them as “false and misleading.”
In the letter, Saidy Bah claimed that several vehicles parked at the Kotu Workshop were stripped of engines and parts, while others were moved without authorisation. He further alleged that four government tractors were transferred to a private garage in Bundung.
But Jagne, who served at the workshop under the State Guard, insisted that all repairs carried out during his tenure were legitimate and intended to keep government vehicles functional. “Those vehicles were government property, not the former president’s,” he told lawmakers. “We never removed or sold any for personal benefit.”
He admitted that some vehicles were “cannibalised,” meaning parts were taken from one vehicle to repair another, but he maintained that this was done out of necessity. Jagne said he met the workshop in a “poor and disorganised state” with no formal handover, no inventory, and missing engines before he assumed control.
Lawmakers pressed him on his authority to operate at the workshop, noting inconsistencies between his claim of reporting to the State Guard and his later statement that he acted under Saidy Bah’s verbal instructions. Jagne also confirmed seizing a vehicle from a civilian named Sanna, allegedly on Saidy Bah’s directive, though he said it was later returned.
The tense exchanges underscored deep confusion over who managed the Kotu Workshop in the aftermath of the 2017 transition. With conflicting testimonies between the soldier and the Vehicle Controller, the committee has pledged to dig deeper into the disappearance and tampering of gove.
