The President of The Gambia Bar Association, Nenneh M.C. Cham, has expressed confidence that the recently concluded 20th Triennial Commonwealth Magistrates and Judges Conference will enhance The Gambia’s justice system through knowledge exchange and innovation.
Speaking in an interview with The Fatu Network, Madam Cham underscored the importance of sharing experiences among Commonwealth member countries, saying such engagement helps address challenges within the judiciary, particularly in adopting modern, technology-driven approaches.
“It will bring out more ideas, because can you imagine from all the Commonwealth countries, over 40 delegates from more than 40 jurisdictions are here. They each have similar systems or even more advanced ones, and they can share what works and what doesn’t. What works for them could also work for The Gambia. I think sharing best practices, there’s nothing more beneficial than that. And even what doesn’t work helps, as it allows judicial officers to network and learn,” she said.
Madam Cham added that while The Gambia’s judiciary continues to make notable progress, there remains room for improvement.
“We’re not doing too badly, I have to admit. But we can always improve, and that’s why the Bar Association continues to work with partners to identify gaps and address them. It’s important that we recognise our constraints and challenges, and work together to overcome them,” she explained.
She further urged the government to maintain its support for the justice sector, stressing that sustained collaboration among all stakeholders is essential to building a more efficient and credible judicial system.
