Journalist Mankajang Testifies on Sukuta–Jabang Police Shooting Incident

By Mama A. Touray

Journalist and content creator Bakary Mankajang today testified before Justice Ebrima Jaiteh at the High Court in Banjul regarding his interview with Mama Jabbi and his subsequent visit to Jululung.

Mankajang, a resident of Fajikunda, appeared as the tenth defence witness following the close of the prosecution’s case. He told the court that he interviewed Mama Jabbi at the home of President Barrow’s sister shortly after her return from Jululung.

“Mama told me in the interview that when she saw Ousainou Bojang, she felt that he had done something,” Mankajang testified.

He explained that after the interview, he reviewed comments on his social media platform and realised the matter was of significant public interest, prompting him to visit Jululung, where the accused was reportedly arrested.

“Shortly after my interview with Mama, I posted it on my platform. From the comment section, I learnt that this was something important I should pursue further. That was when, on 20th September 2023, I planned a visit with a colleague to Jululung,” he said.

He added that during his interview with Mama, she mentioned the names Yaay Faal, the garage chief, and Alfusainey. Upon arriving in Jululung, he sought out both individuals.

“I first spoke with Yaay Faal, then proceeded to meet Alfusainey. I introduced myself as a journalist from The Gambia and asked to interview him, but he said the police had instructed him not to talk to anyone about the case,” Mankajang told the court.

According to him, the garage president later convinced Alfusainey to grant the interview. “Before we started recording, Alfusainey told me and my colleague, Lamin Fatty from Kerr Fatou, that when Ousainou arrived in Jululung, he said, ‘I am here to go to Ziguinchor, but I want to see a marabout. I have an issue with a white lady, and I want a marabout to help me.’ Alfusainey said he then directed him to Mama Jabbi,” Mankajang recounted.

He added that when the interview was later recorded on camera in the presence of the garage president, Alfusainey changed his account, saying that Ousainou had told him, “I killed two people in The Gambia, and I need your help.” Mankajang further testified that when Ousainou arrived at Mama Jabbi’s house, Mama called Alfusainey and informed him that the man he sent had confessed to killing two officers.

When asked whether he had recordings of his interview with Mama Jabbi, Mankajang confirmed that he did. “Yes, I have it, and when I posted the interview on my page, Kerr Fatou also shared it on theirs,” he said.

At this point, defence counsel J. Darboe applied for the video interview to be played in court. The judge ordered Mankajang to produce the recording before the next session.

The case was adjourned to Monday, 13th October 2025, at 1 p.m.
