The Gambia U-17 Boys National Team has successfully passed the mandatory Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) test conducted by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) ahead of the upcoming tournament in Mali.
According to the Gambia Football Federation (GFF), the confirmation was officially communicated by the competition’s organizers.
The Young Scorpions, who will begin their campaign on Sunday in Mali, had earlier conducted a pre-tournament MRI screening in Senegal. The exercise, which cost D559,000.00 (five hundred and fifty-nine thousand dalasi), was fully sponsored by the GFF.
“Most of the players selected are graduates from the GFF’s Talent Development Scheme (TDS), which the Football House launched a few years ago,” the federation stated. “The players were identified from this program across the country, and the objective is not only to participate in the competition but also to ensure that the group graduates to form the core of the future Gambia U-20 team.”
The GFF further outlined the new CAF regulations governing age eligibility. Under these rules, if one to three players are found ineligible after the MRI test, they are barred from participation, though the team remains in the tournament without the option to replace them. However, if four or more players are ruled ineligible, the entire team is disqualified from the competition.
“In light of the above, two of our players have been found ineligible; therefore, they are not eligible to participate in the competition,” the GFF confirmed.
