Northern CAN mourns ‘patriotic’ Buhari

The Northern chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

In a statement issued in Kaduna on Sunday, Chairman of Northern CAN, Rev. Joseph John Hayab, described the late Buhari as a father figure and a leader whose legacy would continue to shape Nigeria’s national discourse.

He said Buhari’s passing marks the close of a pivotal era in Nigeria’s political history.

The CAN chairman noted that although Buhari’s tenure drew mixed reactions, his deep commitment to national unity, patriotism, and discipline could not be denied.

The former President died in the United Kingdom on Sunday.

Hayab said: “His leadership, first as a military Head of State from 1984 to 1985, and later as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023, left a significant impact on Nigeria’s governance.

“He launched the well-known ‘War Against Indiscipline and Corruption’ and was widely regarded for his no-nonsense approach to governance.”

He extended heartfelt condolences to the late President’s widow, Aisha Buhari, and the entire Buhari family, urging them to find solace in the legacy of public service and sacrifice the former leader left behind.

He also offered prayers for divine comfort and strength for the bereaved family during this period of national mourning.

The cleric commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his swift and dignified response to Buhari’s passing, particularly for declaring a national mourning period and directing Vice President Kashim Shettima to accompany the late leader’s remains back to Nigeria.

Hayab further called on Nigerians to honour Buhari’s memory by fostering unity, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence across religious and political divides. He emphasised that regardless of varying opinions about Buhari’s policies, he should be remembered with respect and gratitude.

“While Nigerians may not always agree on the outcomes of his leadership, we must recognise his contributions and honour him as a statesman who gave much of his life to the service of this nation,” he said.
