Central River Region Football Association lacks Transparency

By: Sarjo Kebba Touray
A sports enthusiast

The Central River Region Football Association (CRR-FA), under the administration of Baa Numukunda Kanyi, has failed to present any financial statements, audited accounts, or activity reports since the 2020/21 Elective congress. Congress is a mandated platform for transparency, accountability, and oversight. The FA’s repeated failure is not merely an oversight, but rather reflective of a lack of transparency and a potential cover for corruption. They are systematically diverting focus to the election rather than financial accountability. In 2020/21, President Baa Numukunda Kanyi gave his speech without an adopted agenda, an activity report, and no audited accounts. Few of us raised objections and demanded that the congress be suspended and the FA present reports and minutes of the previous congress. This request was rejected, and the Congress continued without a report.

A similar scenario is about to unfold in the CRRFA elective Congress in 2025. Regarding the proposed agenda shared with the clubs and sporting partners, there is no agenda item for the activity report, nor is there a financial statement. Sadly, Baa Numukunda Kanyi is supposed to hand over to his successor to mark the end of his term.

In any democratic setup, especially an organization entrusted with public funds, accountability and transparency are non-negotiable. The deliberate withholding of financial and activity reports denies member clubs, stakeholders, and the general public their rights to know how their resources are managed. It is essential to inform Mr. Kanyi that his legacy will be remembered differently, as he has many questions to answer.

Many would ask why the secrecy? Mr. Kanyi, where are our reports if there is no misuse or embezzlement of funds? What makes it so difficult for the RFA to present audited accounts or a simple activity report? The association has been staging regional competitions continuously for the past few years. Still, it has not been able to produce a tangible report on the source of funding and its expenditure.

In effect, the poor governance and internal conflict are unavoidable, as evident in the rift between the Baa Numukunda Kanyi-led administration and some teams and club presidents. The CRR-FA has lost public trust and confidence due to its incompetent and deceitful administration.

It is essential to emphasize that it is unacceptable for the FA to continue ignoring basic standards of good governance. The CRR-FA’s consistent failure to produce important reports not only violates its constitutional obligations but also raises a red flag for possible mismanagement and corruption. I want to propose that stakeholders demand immediate action, including the presentation of all overdue reports, independent audits, and increased transparency in all operations.
