Mr Sheriff Saidykhan the Vice President of The Gambia Press Union is morning presided over the commencement of the WoJAG capacity-building training on Gender Sensitive reporting and Ethical Journalism on Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) at the medical and dental council complex in Bakau.
The Women Journalists Association of the Gambia training,according to VP Saidykhan aimes at raising awareness pointing out that its both significant and timely as it will enhance the capacity of women journalists on Gender Sensitive reporting.
“The Gambia Press Union (GPU) has a policy on sexual and gender-based violence, which primarily focuses on preventing and addressing workplace sexual harassment within media houses.
He added that the two day capacity building will help to equip women journalists with the requisite knowledge and skills on Ethical Journalism on Gender Sensitive reporting.
“The Cherno Jallow Charter for Ethics provides fundamental guidelines for journalists, addressing key issues such as gender and sex and to expose all forms of gender based violence.”
Ethical Journalism ,he emphasized plays a crucial role, thereby enhancing public trust, and to ensure credibility of the Media.
“The training will empower women journalists, with the right information to amplify the voices and survivors of Sexual and Gender Based Violence.
Over the past decades, the Gambia Press Union has committed itself to promoting and ensuring journalism excellence in The Gambia.”
He further stated that the two-day training will further equip women journalists with the necessary knowledge and skills towards enhancing their capabilities.
“In conclusion, the Gambia Press Union is once again pleased to be associated with the Women Journalists Association of the Gambia (WOJAG) for facilitating this important training.
We look forward to further collaboration with WOJAG through our shared commitment to strengthening the capacities of women journalists in the media.”
Speaking earlier, the president of the Female journalists Association of the Gambia Annet Camara spoke at length on the overview of training noting its importance in advancing the agenda of women.
20 early and mid career women journalists are taking part in the training to equip them with the skills needed to thrive in the media industry by promoting positive female representation on the news.
The opening ceremony was chaired by Banna Sabally
