The 85th Ordinary Session of African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) yesterday opened here in Banjul with delegates reaffirming Africa’s commitment to justice, equality, and human dignity.
Addressing the gathering at Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara Conference Centre in Bijilo, President of the Pan African Parliament, Chief Fortune Charumbira, highlighted the continent’s growing youth population, cautioning that it has not translated into proportional economic growth. He reflected on recent unconstitutional changes of government in Madagascar, urging African states to evaluate their approaches to governance and human rights.
“The human rights of African peoples are not optional; they form the foundation for sustainable development,” Charumbira stressed. “The Pan-African Parliament stands in full solidarity with the African Commission as it works to protect and promote these fundamental rights.”
Joseph Whittal, Chairperson of the Network of African National Human Rights Institutions (NANHRI), highlighted growing challenges to civic space across the continent. He warned that restrictive laws, harassment of journalists, and constraints on human rights defenders erode public trust and social cohesion, while conflicts and climate-related disasters continue to displace millions and exacerbate humanitarian crises.
“These realities demand strengthened accountability and governance anchored in justice, transparency, and respect for human dignity,” Whittal said. “National development and security agendas must be pursued within a human right–based framework that safeguards civic freedoms and promotes inclusive participation.”
Lady Justice Stella I. Anukam of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights reiterated the Court’s commitment to human rights across Africa, emphasizing its shared mission with the Commission to interpret and enforce the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
Established under the African Charter, the ACHPR remains a central body tasked with protecting and promoting the rights of Africans across the continent, ensuring that justice, equality, and human dignity remain at the heart of governance and development.
