In a significant political development, seventy-two (72) members of the opposition Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC), led by their Chairman, Omar Sowe, and a notable group including Buba Nimaga Ceesay from the United Democratic Party (UDP), have crossed over to the National People’s Party (NPP). The event, described as a historic moment by party insiders, underscores the growing appeal and influence of the ruling party.
The defection, which took place today at the NPP headquarters, was facilitated by a coordinated effort from prominent NPP leaders, including Lamin Saidy, Hon. Amadou Sowe, the Kombo East District MP, Malangba Manneh, Seedy Dem, and Alhagie Bojang. Their combined efforts were instrumental in convincing the defectors to join the “mighty NPP.”
Speaking on behalf of the new members, Omar Sowe praised the leadership of the NPP and highlighted their commitment to national development, unity, and progress. “Our decision to join the NPP is rooted in the party’s inclusive agenda and its unwavering dedication to improving the lives of all Gambians,” he stated.
Hon. Amadou Sowe also addressed the gathering, emphasizing the NPP’s vision for a united Gambia. “This crossover demonstrates the trust and confidence Gambians have in the leadership of President Adama Barrow and the NPP’s policies. We welcome our new members and assure them of our collective resolve to work for the betterment of our country,” he said.
The NPP headquarters was filled with jubilant supporters celebrating the new additions to their ranks. Party stalwarts described the development as a testament to the NPP’s growing dominance and appeal across political divides.
This crossover marks yet another milestone for the NPP as it continues to consolidate its position ahead of future elections. Political analysts suggest that this could signal a shift in the political landscape, with more opposition members potentially following suit.
