The Drug Law Enforcement Agency of The Gambia (DLEAG) has revealed that it has destroyed 60 cannabis farms in its operations in Niumi Jinak.
According to a communique from DLEAG, the general public is informed as part of ongoing efforts to address illicit durg trafficking and cultivation of prohibited drugs, the Agency in collaboration with the Gambia Police Force, the Gambia Armed Forces, State Intelligence Service, the Gambia Immigration Department, the Gambia Fire and Rescue Service and the Gambia Prison Service conducted a two-day operation from 28 February to 1 March 2026, targeting the illicit cultivation of cannabis on Jinack Island, North Bank Region.
DLEAG revealed that during the operation, sixty (60) cannabis farms were destroyed on the Island. The operation represents a major disruption of this illicit trade and also addresses the long-standing tradition of illegal cannabis cultivation, which is a flagrant violation of the Drug Control Act, stated the Agency.
“It is imperative to note that Section 36 of the Drug Control Act, 2003 explicitly prohibits the cultivation of plants from which prohibited drugs can be obtained,” DLEAG cited.
The Agency reassured its firm commitment to the enforcement of a robust supply suppression regime. In this regard, the public is encouraged to explore other viable means of subsistence other than engaging in illegal cannabis cultivation.
Guided by the oversight of the Ministry of Interior, DLEAG added that it will continue to implement its mandate to ensure strict adherence and effective control of illicit drug trafficking and abuse with implementtation of effective strategies and initiatives to address drug-related crimes to improve public safety and security.
