2027: Peter Obi explains his membership of Labour Party and ADC coalition

The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Mr. Peter Obi, has reaffirmed his continued membership of the party, dispelling rumours suggesting his defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) amid the formation of a political coalition of opposition leaders.

Obi made the clarification on Friday during the official flag-off of the Labour Party’s campaign for the November 8, 2025 Anambra State governorship election. The event, held in the state, featured the party’s gubernatorial candidate, Dr. George Moghalu, and his running mate, Lady Ifeoma Okaro.

Addressing party supporters, Obi explained that while he and other opposition figures, including elected LP lawmakers, are part of a broader coalition aimed at the 2027 general elections, he remains firmly within the Labour Party.

“I will start this conversation by clarifying some confusions making the rounds,” he said. “Let me put it categorically clear: I, along with National Assembly members of the Labour Party, are part of the coalition that has adopted the ADC platform for the 2027 elections. However, as of today, I remain a member of the Labour Party.”

He continued, “If anyone asks you what party Peter Obi belongs to today, tell them I am in the Labour Party. If they ask about the coalition, let them know it is a strategic alliance for 2027.”

Obi also took the opportunity to formally declare his intention to contest for the presidency again in 2027, expressing confidence in his capabilities.

“Everyone has the right to run for president. I won’t stop anyone. But if anyone asks, let them know that I am in the race, and no one does it better than me,” he asserted.

In his address to supporters, Dr. George Moghalu, the Labour Party’s gubernatorial candidate for Anambra, pledged to lead the state with a deep sense of responsibility, guided by faith and inclusivity.
