100 Graduates Sworn into National Youth Service Program

Yesterday evening, the National Youth Service Scheme officially welcomed 100 members of its second cohort of graduate participants at a ceremony held at the Independence Stadium in Bakau.

In his address to the newly sworn-in members, Honourable Minister Bakary Y. Badjie reminded the graduates of the journey ahead

“I hope that in 12 months, when we meet again, we will be able to look back and celebrate the knowledge and contributions you bring from your institutions. Today, you are guided by leaders—from His Excellency the President to senior officials—but this marks the start of a journey where many of you will rise to positions of responsibility. Prepare yourselves to serve as ministers, judges, magistrates, commanders in the army or police, and as engineers, doctors, and nurses—the professionals our nation will depend on, rather than relying on foreign expertise.”

Highlighting the Government’s commitment to youth empowerment, Minister Badjie noted that under the leadership of His Excellency President Barrow, initiatives such as the National University Studies Program have been strengthened to address challenges like unemployment. He also emphasized the government’s heavy investment in higher education, from the University of The Gambia to the University of Science and Technology, including the transformation of MDI and GTTI into universities.

“Take full advantage of these opportunities to become productive citizens, engage in society, and contribute to the development of our nation,” he added.

The Minister also expressed sincere gratitude to the University of The Gambia for its continued partnership since the program’s launch in November 2023, and to UNDP The Gambia Resident Representative for ongoing collaboration and support.

Finally, he thanked the members of the Gambia Armed Forces , whose guidance and mentorship during orientation and training have been invaluable. Special recognition was given to Camp Commander Mr. Sanyang and all those who contributed to the success of the program.

On behalf of His Excellency President Barrow, the Government of The Gambia, and the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Honourable Minister Badjie officially declared the second cohort of the National Youth Service Graduate Program successfully passed out.
