Zonal Committee Suspends Players, Fines Teams Over Delay Tactics

By Kemo Kanyi

The West Coast Region (WCR) Zonal Committee has suspended three players and imposed fines on Gunjur and Sanyang Zones following incidents that delayed the start of their recent match.

According to the committee, the players Babucarr Jatta (No. 12) of Sanyang Zone and Dawda Sowe (No. 10) and Sheikh Omar Njie (No. 20) of Gunjur Zone failed to enter the pitch on time, allegedly due to superstition. Efforts by match officials to persuade the players to take the field were unsuccessful, leading the referee, in consultation with the match commissioner, to abandon the game due to time constraints.

The committee has ruled that both zones pay a fine of Five Thousand Dalasis (D5,000) each within seven days of receiving the notice. The three players involved are suspended for two matches.

In a statement, the WCR Zonal Committee explained that the match was prematurely ended due to “technical errors,” but after reviewing the referee’s and match commissioner’s reports, it was determined that the abandonment was a joint decision caused by darkness and the delay tactics of the players.

“The players who refused to enter the field at the start of the game brought the match into disrepute,” the committee said. “Both zones failed to control their fans, supporters, players, and officials during the prolonged stoppage. These actions are uncalled for and not encouraged at any time in the tournament.”

Following the review, the organizing committee confirmed that the match between Sanyang and Gunjur Zones will be replayed in accordance with the official reports.
