Former Rivers State governor and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has finally decided to bury the hatchet following the protracted political crisis that has rocked the state as a result of his fall out with his successor, Siminalayi Fubara.
The resolve was made during a fence-mending meeting at the instance of President Bola Tinubu on Thursday night in Abuja where the duo decided to embrace peace and work together for the good of the state.
Wike who addressed journalists at the Presidential Villa after the closed-door meeting, declared that both camps have agreed to end hostilities and work together in the interest of peace and development in the state.
“We have all agreed to work together with the governor, and the governor also agreed to work together with all of us. We are members of the same political family,” Wike said.
Reflecting on the months of political feud that forced Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in Rivers, the FCT Minister said though it was normal for human beings to have disagreements, the important thing was for them to them to find a common ground and settle their differences.
“Yes, just like humans, you have a disagreement, and then you also have a time to settle your disagreement. And that has been finally concluded today. So for me, everything is over,” he added.
He further urged their political supporters to remain calm and united.
“And I enjoin everybody who believes to work with us, to also work together with everybody, that there’s no more acrimony. There’s nothing to say.”
Also confirming the truce, Governor Fubara lauded President Tinubu for brokering peace between him and his estranged political godfather, describing the peace accord as a “moment of divine intervention and a critical step towards stabilizing Rivers State.’
“For me, it’s a day we have to thank Almighty God. What we need for the progress of Rivers State is peace, and by the special grace of God, this night, with the help of Mr. President and the agreement of the leaders of the state, our leader, peace has returned in Rivers State.
“We’ll do everything within our power to make sure that we sustain it this time around,” the suspended governor said.
The peace meeting also had in attendance the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly Martins Amaewhule, and other members loyal to Wike who had been engulfed in a running battle with Fubara, and they all pledged to work together for peace to return to the state.
Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to the President, Bayo Onanuga, in a statement he shared on X, said the peace meeting reflected the President’s continued commitment to stability in Rivers State and Nigeria in general.
“Just like he brought together the political gladiators to sign a peace deal in December 2023, he repeated the same on Thursday night
“President Tinubu has demonstrated once again that he wants peace for Rivers State,’ Onanuga wrote.
