Warrant Officer Details Recovery of Jammeh’s Vehicles Before Parliamentary Committee

Warrant Officer Class 2 Lamin Susso yesterday appeared before the parliamentary committee providing detailed testimony regarding the recovery and inventory of vehicles linked to former President Yahya Jammeh.

He appeared before the Special Select Committee on the Sale and Disposal of Assets identified by the Janneh Commission and linked to former President Yahya Jammeh.

During the session, Susso clarified his role in the process, emphasizing that he was tasked to take inventory and report on the recovered vehicles, rather than to exercise control over the operation. “I was the eyes and ears of the commander at that place,” he explained, noting that his responsibility was to observe and document the movement of vehicles under the supervision of his superior officers.

Susso recounted how he was instructed to go to assess and record the vehicles that had been recovered and parked. While he was aware that his junior officers, including Sergeant Njie, were performing mechanical work, he stressed that he was never told they were in charge. The witness maintained that any decisions or anomalies observed during the recovery process were promptly reported to the commander.

The testimony highlighted the complexity of the recovery operation, including multiple locations and vehicles recovered at different times. Susso explained that two main records were expected: an inventory of the vehicles and a document tracking the assignment and movement of each vehicle. “One document is an inventory at MSC; the other shows who was assigned a car and where it is,” he stated.

The committee scrutinized the accuracy of the records, questioning Susso about discrepancies and missing details. Susso acknowledged the challenges, noting that while he maintained his own inventory, some vehicles had been documented separately by other officers. Despite these challenges, he insisted that his records accurately reflected the status of the vehicles under his supervision.

Susso’s testimony also shed light on the chain of command during the recovery operations, affirming that the state guard and their commanders were in charge of overall control. “Everything is under the state guard’s authority except for my responsibility to record and report,” he said.

The session underscored the ongoing efforts of the committee to clarify the processes surrounding the recovery of assets linked to Jammeh, as part of broader efforts to ensure transparency and accountability in the management of state resources.

The hearing is expected to continue with further witnesses to corroborate the inventory and movement of vehicles, as the committee works to reconcile records and verify the disposition of former government assets.
