UTG Hosts 9th U6+ Consortium Annual Conference

By: Binta Jaiteh

The University of The Gambia (UTG) on Tuesday hosted the 9th U6+ Consortium Annual Conference, bringing together scholars, leaders, and experts from across Africa to discuss challenges and envision solutions for the continent’s future.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Minister of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology, Professor Pierre Gomez, says Africa’s story is often portrayed through a one-dimensional lens that highlights only its challenges.

“We celebrate the groundbreaking research emerging from our institutions, the expanding access to education, and the young entrepreneurs leveraging technology to solve local problems,” Professor Gomez remarked. He noted that the meeting would also examine pressing issues such as climate change, healthcare gaps, and the need for curricula that prepare youth for the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

UTG Vice Chancellor, Professor Herbert Robinson, emphasized the importance of knowledge exchange in advancing academic collaboration across the continent.

“In an era defined by rapid advancements in science, innovation, and technology, this conference provides a vital platform for sharing ideas and research that address Africa’s unique challenges,” he said, adding that research remains central to informing teaching, policymaking, and development.

Professor Robinson noted that the U6+ Consortium was established over a decade ago to position African universities as key drivers of continental development. He reaffirmed UTG’s commitment to supporting the consortium’s goals.

Also speaking, Dr. Akin Awoyemi of the University of Liberia described the gathering as a forum for brainstorming on the future of tertiary education in Africa. He expressed confidence that despite challenges such as technology gaps and climate change, the consortium would continue to push forward with innovative solutions.
