UDP Warns Against Fake Delegates, Reaffirms Darboe as Presidential Candidate

By Michaella Faith Wright

The United Democratic Party (UDP) has cautioned Gambians against individuals allegedly misrepresenting themselves as party delegates and soliciting support for a presidential flagbearer other than Ousainou Darboe.

In a statement dated September 23, 2025, the party said such actions were unauthorised and do not reflect the will of its leadership or membership. “Neither H.E. Ousainou Darboe nor the UDP leadership has sanctioned or authorised any such activity,” the statement clarified.

The UDP reaffirmed Darboe as its duly elected presidential flagbearer, chosen through what it described as transparent and democratic internal processes. The party emphasised that it will formally present him to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) for nomination.

“Our party stands united in the pursuit of a Gambia that is free from corruption, mismanagement, and the misappropriation of public resources,” the release stated, noting that the 2021 elections remain a reminder of the dangers of misinformation.

The UDP also called on Gambians to stay vigilant against “deceit and distractions motivated by personal ambition,” urging supporters to remain focused on a shared vision of accountability and prosperity.

The statement further accused President Adama Barrow’s administration of “rampant corruption and gross mismanagement of public resources” and outlined key reforms, including independent audits, recovery of stolen assets, and stronger anti-corruption laws.

“Gambians deserve a government that is accountable, transparent, and committed to the people’s welfare,” the UDP concluded.
