Magistrate K.B. Sambou of Brikama Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 11th November, sentenced two Gambian men for the illegal removal of forestry produce.

Lamin Badjie and Bubacarr Nyassi were jointly charged for transporting 200 pieces of rhum (palm tree) in June 2025 at Batending Village in the Kombo’s, West Coast Region, without a permit from the Department of Forestry, contrary to Section 81 (1) and (3) of the Forest Act 2018. Bubacarr Nyassi faced an additional count for transporting the same load without a licence.

The charges were read to the accused in court, and both pleaded guilty. ASP K. Ceesay, representing the Inspector General of Police, presented evidence and tendered documents, which the accused did not contest. Magistrate Sambou admitted the documents into evidence.

In her sentencing, Magistrate Sambou fined both Lamin Badjie and Bubacarr Nyassi D5,000 each for the first count, with a default of six months’ imprisonment. For the second count, Bubacarr Nyassi was fined D5,000 or six months’ imprisonment in default.

The court also ordered that the confiscated 200 pieces of rhum palm be forfeited to the State. The Department of Forestry is to sell the seized produce, with proceeds going to the State coffers.
