Hundreds of aggrieved youths and women on Monday, took to the streets of Kano metropolis, to protest the killing of 16 northern travelers in Uromi, Esan North-East Local Government Area of Edo State last week.
The protesters who displayed various placards with inscriptions such as: “Hunters are not criminals”, “Hunting is a business, not a crime” “Justice for our traveling hunters” “We need speedy dispensation of justice” “All we want is justice” “Stop killing Northerners” “We are peace-loving people” and “Justice for innocent souls”, demanded speedy justice for the killed travelers who were said to be hunters traveling home for the Sallah celebration.
The protesters who lined the streets waving their placards as the convoy of Governor Abba Yusuf and his Edo State counterpart, Monday Okpebholo, passed through during their visit to the families of the victims, also pleaded with the governors to ensure that the families of the victims were promptly compensated.
Yusuf who addressed the protesters, pledged cash assistance and food supplies to the affected families, while Okpebholo also assured the families that compensation would be provided and reiterated his commitment to ensuring that justice is served.
Both governors also reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring that the perpetrators are brought to justice and that such incidents do not occur again.
The protest has created tension in some parts, especially among non northerners in that part, as narratives, especially ially on social media have insinuated attacks on non northerners over the Edo killings.
The authorities and other stakeholders have continued to call for peace, with promises that justice will be served.
