The Leader of the Unite Movement for Change, Talib Ahmed Bensouda, has called on members of his movement to prioritise ethics, morals, and accountability in their political activities.
In a WhatsApp audio message shared on Monday, the Kanifing Municipal Council Mayor said integrity remains a missing pillar in The Gambia’s governance system, especially as political parties transition into government. He cautioned against what he described as a “copy and paste” approach to governance, urging leaders to pursue development based on local innovation and context.
“Copy and paste system of the white people, copy and paste of other countries’ system can’t move the country forward. We must be innovative in our governance,” Bensouda said.
The former National Organising Secretary of the United Democratic Party (UDP) also advised his members to steer clear of tribal and ethnic politics, stressing that national unity must come before all other forms of identity.
“Let us make all Gambians equal. This person is from here or that person is from there, that has no significance. What’s important is that we are all Gambians and we all hold a national document that binds us together. That’s our bond and our secret connection we must protect. This is what ‘Unite’ means,” he said.
As political discourse in The Gambia increasingly becomes characterised by insults, personal attacks, and divisive rhetoric, Bensouda appealed for restraint among political actors and urged them to focus on constructive dialogue.
“Don’t spread hate, don’t insult, it’s not necessary. Let us discuss ideas, concepts, programmes, and policies that can move the nation forward. Let us compete on those ideas and programmes,” he advised.
Highlighting the growing support for his movement, Bensouda revealed that the Unite Movement for Change has registered more than 25,000 members across the country, positioning it among the fastest-growing political entities in The Gambia.
