Former Senate President and Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Reconciliation Committee, Dr. Bukola Saraki, has called on party leaders to urgently resolve the lingering dispute over the office of the party’s national secretary.
He described it as a critical step before any meaningful progress, such as convening a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting or holding a successful national convention, can be made.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television Friday night, Saraki said the unresolved leadership tussle had become a significant obstacle to internal unity and strategic planning within the party.
“This is a problem that has existed for some time,” Saraki said. “Before we can have a smooth convention, we must first hold a NEC meeting, and before that, we need to agree on who our secretary is. The issue has lingered for ages and didn’t start today, but now, we must face it head-on.”
At the heart of the controversy is a leadership crisis over who holds the position of national secretary. Despite a Supreme Court ruling delivered on March 21, 2025, affirming Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the legitimate national secretary of the PDP, some factions within the party continue to resist the decision, thereby stalling key party functions.

Saraki noted that even the clarity provided by Nigeria’s electoral umpire, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has not fully quelled internal dissent. Recounting a recent meeting between PDP stakeholders and INEC officials, he said a strong consensus had been reached, validating Anyanwu’s position.
“Nine out of 10 of us at that meeting accepted INEC’s position that as far as it is concerned, the secretary of the party remains Sam Anyanwu,” Saraki affirmed.
The former Senate President, who has been leading reconciliation efforts within the party, stressed that the continued impasse is not just a procedural matter but one that undermines the PDP’s credibility and capacity to position itself as a viable alternative in Nigeria’s political landscape.
“This is not about politics or personality,” he insisted. “The world is watching. We have said there is no personal interest here. We are guided only by what is acceptable under the law.”
Saraki urged party leaders to rise above factional interests and prioritize unity, warning that without internal alignment, the party risks losing its footing ahead of upcoming electoral contests.
