Sanyang Community Mourns Nuha Ceesay, Victim of UK Industrial Accident

Hundreds of mourners gathered on Saturday, 15th November 2025, to pay their final respects to Nuha Ceesay, a native of Sanyang who died in an industrial accident in United Kingdom.

Late Ceesay was said to have tragically died in an industrial accident at a chicken processing factory in Cullingworth, Bingley, United Kingdom.

Ceesay’s body arrived at Banjul International Airport on Friday, 14th November, via TUI Airlines, accompanied by the President of the Sanyang UK Association (SUKA), Sarjo Fofana. He was received by key community leaders, including the Sanyang Diaspora Ambassador to The Gambia, Abdoulie Sallah Fatty, Sanyang Development Fund (SDF) President Yankuba Ceesay, SDF Vice President and SUKA country coordinator Buba P. Bojang, as well as family members and other dignitaries.

The industrial accident occurred on the evening of 28th October 2025, around 7:15 pm. According to the West Yorkshire News Telegraph, emergency services were called to Station Yard, Station Road, Cullingworth, where Ceesay was pronounced dead at the scene. A coroner’s inquest has since been opened to investigate the incident.

At the burial ceremony in Sanyang, Sarjo Fofana described Ceesay’s death as a profound loss for the community in both the UK and Gambia. He praised Ceesay’s dedication to religion, hard work, and service to the community. Fofana also revealed that SUKA had fully covered the repatriation costs, totaling approximately £5,543 (around D600,000), without any financial assistance from the Gambian Embassy in the UK or other donors.

Community members, including imams, leaders, and family members, reflected on Ceesay’s contributions to Sanyang. He had been actively involved in community development, planting trees, digging wells, supporting vulnerable students and families, and leading clean-up initiatives.

Prayers were offered for Allah’s mercy on Ceesay, and mourners encouraged the community to honour his legacy through service and compassion, keeping his memory alive for generations to come.
