Reps southern caucus backs Tinubu’s tax reform bills

]The Southern caucus in the House of Representatives has declared its support for the tax reform bills introduced by President Bola Tinubu.

The leader of the caucus, Nicholas Mutu, disclosed this at a news conference on Tuesday in Abuja.

The bills seek to provide a fiscal framework as well as clear and concise legal frameworks for all taxes in the country.

The legislation also aims to reduce disputes in tax administration.

However, governors of the 36 states have demanded the withdrawal of the proposed legislation to allow for more consultations and public input.

At the briefing, Mutu said the caucus welcomed the bills and would commence legislative actions in due course.

On his part, the lawmaker from Bayelsa, Fred Agbedi, said the National Assembly has the responsibility to receive proposals for any sort of bill either from the Executive or individuals.

He said: “The President has sent an executive bill, what the southern caucus is saying is that we are ready to take up our official responsibility of making laws for the nation.

“We welcome the bill and that as we process it, imputes are made from our various states and constituencies.

“Some states have already received those imputes, and so we align with our constituents and the states that we represent. And so we are ready to work to ensure that we give a better tax law to Nigeria.”
