Presidency waves off PDP’s claim that Ghana election will impact 2027 polls

The Presidency, on Wednesday, addressed concerns about the implications of the opposition National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) victory in Ghana’s presidential election for the APC.

Bwala downplayed the significance of the NDC’s win, saying that the APC is not “bothered” by the outcome.

He noted that the President Bola Tinubu’s administration remains focused on delivering its mandate to Nigerians, despite growing speculation about the 2027 elections.

In Ghana, John Mahama, the NDC candidate, defeated Mahamudu Bawumia of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the just-concluded election.

However, Bwala emphasized that Tinubu’s administration has gained public trust by focusing on “everyday realities beyond political affiliations.”

Speaking at the national secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abuja on Wednesday, Bwala said Nigerians are witnessing the impactful efforts of the Tinubu administration, which is prioritizing the needs of citizens over political considerations.

“They don’t actually care whether you are white or black-skinned or whatever, as long as what matters to them on their dinner table is dealt with,” he said.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has, however, interpreted the NDC’s victory in Ghana as a signpost of the end of APC rule. The opposition party may be eager to capitalize on the momentum from Ghana’s election, but Bwala’s comments suggest that the APC remains confident in its ability to deliver for Nigerians and secure re-election in 2027.

Bwala emphasized that Tinubu is committed to governance and will not be distracted by comments about the upcoming elections. “So, the time for politicking is not yet, and when that time comes, we are going to be ready for everyone,” he said.

He also expressed confidence that Tinubu’s agenda, which is “working well,” will ultimately win over Nigerians and secure his re-election. “The president’s agenda… is what will naturally endear Nigerians to vote for him for the second term,” he noted.

Tinubu, Bwala pointed out, is constitutionally eligible to contest for a second term in office.

“He is more than eminently qualified constitutionally to contest for the second term in office, and God willing, if God gives him life and health, we do hope that he will run his cause as provided by the Constitution,” he said.
