PDP accuses Aiyedatiwa of abandoning Akeredolu’s projects, APC counters

The Ondo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of neglecting several ongoing projects initiated by his predecessor, late Rotimi Akeredolu.

The opposition party claimed the governor’s actions suggest a deliberate effort to erase Akeredolu’s legacy, a charge the All Progressives Congress (APC) has firmly denied.

In a statement issued on Sunday by its Director of Media and Publicity, Mr. Leye Igbabo, the PDP expressed deep concern over what it described as the “unwillingness and inability” of Governor Aiyedatiwa to continue with projects started by the late governor, despite having state resources at his disposal.

The party alleged that political animosity stemming from tensions during Akeredolu’s prolonged illness and eventual death might be influencing the governor’s decisions.

“The available facts show that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa is not prepared to complete the projects,” the statement read.

“We believe this is a calculated move to destroy his predecessor’s legacy under the guise of political vengeance against those who opposed his emergence as governor.”

Governor Aiyedatiwa, who assumed office following Akeredolu’s passing on December 27, 2023, later clinched the APC’s ticket and won the November 16, 2024, governorship election in the state.

Reacting to the allegations, Mr. Steve Otaloro, the APC’s Director of Media and Publicity in the state, dismissed the PDP’s claims as baseless and politically motivated.

“It is apparent that the PDP is resorting to desperate attempts to remain relevant by fabricating claims without factual backing,” Otaloro said.

He emphasized that Governor Aiyedatiwa considers the previous administration an extension of his own, having served as deputy governor during Akeredolu’s tenure. “It is, therefore, nonsensical to suggest that he would undermine a legacy he helped build,” Otaloro noted.

The APC highlighted ongoing projects such as the Oda Road expansion in Akure as evidence of the administration’s commitment to continuity in governance. The party further accused the PDP of launching a campaign of disinformation after failing to overturn Aiyedatiwa’s election victory at the tribunal.

Otaloro advised the PDP to focus on internal party reforms rather than “concocting lies to mislead the public,” citing recent defections, including those of sitting governors, as signs of the party’s weakening influence.
