Opposition coalition sparks tensions as Atiku’s aide accuses APC-led govt of fear-mongering

Amid rising political temperatures ahead of the 2027 general election, Paul Ibe, spokesperson for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has accused the current administration of being afraid of a growing opposition coalition that seeks to unseat the All Progressives Congress (APC) from power.

Speaking on Politics Today, a political affairs programme on Channels Television, Ibe dismissed recent remarks by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, who earlier in the day declared that any opposition alliance would collapse before the next election.

Wike’s comments came during the inauguration of road projects in Abuja, where he took a swipe at what he described as the “doomed efforts” of opposition heavyweights, Atiku, Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, and Nasir El-Rufai, who are reportedly in talks to form a political coalition.

But Ibe, in a sharp response, suggested that the Tinubu administration’s fixation on 2027 is rooted in insecurity rather than confidence.

“All this noise about the coalition not working shows they are scared—plain and simple,” Ibe said. “Otherwise, why are they so bothered by talks still in their early stages? Whether the coalition succeeds or not should be of no concern to them if they were sure of their performance.”

He urged Nigerians to remain focused, emphasizing that meaningful change would require active participation in the democratic process.

“Nigerians should keep their eyes on the ball,” he said. “Better days are possible, but we must work for them. That work begins with making sure this administration is voted out in 2027.”

Ibe did not mince words when assessing President Tinubu’s first year in office. Describing it as “a total failure,” he criticized the administration for what he called misplaced priorities.

“It’s all about 2027 for them, not about governance. The people are hungry, the economy is unstable, and insecurity persists. Yet, the focus is on retaining power,” he said.

The Tinubu government has repeatedly urged Nigerians to be patient, assuring them that the current economic hardship is temporary. But Ibe remains unconvinced.

“If there were genuine signs that things would improve, Nigerians would have started to feel it by now,” he argued. “We are halfway into this term, and the suffering has only deepened.”
