NYSS Deepens Stakeholder Engagement to Transform Youth Empowerment

By: Lamarana S. Jallow

The National Youth Service Scheme (NYSS), under the Ministry of Youth and Sports, is taking bold steps to strengthen partnerships and enhance opportunities for young people as part of its renewed drive to transform youth development across The Gambia.

In a week, NYSS leadership held a high-level meeting with the Hon. Minister of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (MoHERST) to explore areas of collaboration.

The discussions yielded significant outcomes, including full scholarships for NYSS staff to pursue undergraduate and postgraduate studies, full scholarships for the five best-performing youth currently enrolled in NYSS’s TVET, Apprenticeship, and Graduate Programmes to further their education and training, and  access to MoHERST TVET institutions nationwide for young people seeking to upgrade their skills.

In a related development, the Deputy Executive Director of NYSS, Ms. Lala Touray, visited the Scheme’s farm in Nyanibereh as part of her ongoing assessment of staff and facilities.

The visit aimed to evaluate farm operations, engage with staff, and explore ways to boost productivity and sustainability.

During her engagement, Ms. Touray emphasized the importance of teamwork, innovation, and commitment, highlighting the farm’s vital role in supporting NYSS’s agricultural and livelihood programmes. The visit also identified areas of improvement to create a more enabling work environment for staff and trainees.

Meanwhile, NYSS leadership also held a series of strategic engagements with the senior management of the Directorate of Youth and Sports and heads of all satellite institutions under the Ministry of Youth and Sports, including the National Youth Council (NYC), National Sports Council (NSC), NEDI, and President’s International Award (PIA).

The meetings aimed to formally introduce Ms. Touray and strengthen collaboration between the institutions. Discussions focused on improving coordination, avoiding duplication of efforts, and ensuring better alignment of youth development initiatives to maximize efficiency and impact.

Through these engagements, NYSS, under the leadership of Mr. Mustapha Badjie, continues to build strong partnerships and promote a unified approach to youth empowerment. The Scheme remains committed to equipping young people with the skills, experience, and support needed to become productive citizens contributing to national development.
